A Bachelor's degree in the old days meant something different from what it means today. For many, it was the means to land a white collar job. These days, it implies the ability to reason at a basic level and to read and write to be understood. Is your degree preparing you for the workplace? Is it setting in place the foundation to eventually perform at the graduate level? How do you know?
Some folks view the Master's as a terminal degree - usually the case in a technician's degree such the Master of Business Administration (to do consulting or render business services). A Master's in Accounting means you have the Bachelor's plus 30 hours in Accounting to sit for the CPA exams. One who holds a Master's is an Instructor, not a Professor. Do you know what your degree will prepare you to do? How do you know?
There are actually two different types of Doctoral Degrees - a practitioner degree such as law degree, a dentist, medical doctor and so on and a literary doctorate such as the Ph.D. The Doctor of Philosophy means you "police" the profession. You perform academics, research and publish and teach college. A professor who holds a doctorate is ranked as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (some are an Emeritus).
Post Docs already hold a doctorate and are working as an intern or Fellow somewhere for about three years to get practical experience. If they were not (during their doctoral studies) performing as a Research Fellow or Teaching Fellow, they may be doing that now. If you are currently occupied with this pursuit, what will you do afterwards? Have you thought about it?
Having been a Doctoral Dissertation Chair and Committee Member for years, sometimes I get called upon to consult regarding whether a Doctoral Learner's Dissertation is patent. In other words, is it mechanically complete and sound or does it lack mechanical competency and value? It does not take more than a few minutes to determine this by asking seven study questions.
